Mid Session Market - Nov 05, 2008

The market is trading on the back foot after a strong start to the session as the profit booking across the selective sectoral indices prevails. The market surged since the initial bell but unable to sustains at the higher level and gave up all its initial gains as the investors are taking wait and watch approach before taking fresh positions. From the sectoral indices, Oil and Gas down by more than 5% is the worst hit as most selling is witness from this basket. However, the IT, Consumer durables and health care scrips are attracting investors’ confidence that are trading more than 2% each.

The BSE Sensex is now hovering above the 10,400 mark and the NSE Nifty is above the 3,050 mark. The overall market breadth is positive as 1254 stocks are advancing while 1077 stocks are declining and the 79stocks remained unchanged on BSE.

TCS reported the top gainer from the BSE Sensex pack as it was trading higher by (5.86%) at Rs.538 while Reliance Industries reported the top loser down by (10.08%) at Rs.1308.45.

The BSE Mid cap is higher by 23.65 points at 3,469.87 and the BSE small Cap up by 13.71 points to trade at 4,048.82.

At 12.33 pm, BSE Sensex was at 10,403.21 down by 227.91 points and the NSE Nifty was at 3,076.55 down by 65.55 points.

The Oil and Gas index is trading with heavy losses of (5.79%) or 391.03 points at 6,358.48. Pulling it are Reliance industries trading down by 9.22% along with Gail India by 8.36%, RPL by 5.57%, HPCL by 2.81%, Essar Oil by 2.72%, BPCL by 2.49% and IOCL by 1.44%.

The Metal index is down by 79.54 points at 5,775.13. Losers are Sail by 8.08%, Tata Steel by 5.48%, Hind Zinc by 1.78%, Jindal Steel by 1.31% and Sterlite Inds by 0.88%.

The IT index is trading up by 71.77 at 2,821.72 Pushing it are TCS up 6.26% along with Tech Mahindra by 6.01%, Finance Tech by 4.43%, Mphasis by 3.58% at Rs156.30, Satyam by 2.86%, Wipro by 2.28% at Rs269.

The Health Care index is higher by 85.55 points at 2,964.93. Gainers are Sun Pharma by 12.61%, Ranbaxy Labs by 6.57%, Wockhardt by5.08%, Matrix Labs by 4.96%, Orchid chem by 4.64% and Apollo Hos by 4.03%.

The Bankex index is trading with marginal gains of 7.56 points at 5,748.60 as Federal bank up 4.15%, Kotak bank 3.35%, Bank of India by 2.42%, Indus Ind bank by 2.15% and Canara bank by 1.74%.
