The Indian market closed in the negative territory on the back of weak cues from the Asian markets. The market tumbled since the initial bell and kept on hovering in the negative territory throughout the trading session. The market gives up its yesterday’s gains as the selling intensified across the counters. From the sectoral front, the capital goods and metal stocks faced heavy selling pressures.
The BSE Sensex closed lower by 169.46 points at 15,587.62 and NSE Nifty fell by 51.55 points to close at 4,709.65. The Sensex touched an intraday high of 15,770.40 and low of 15,479.42. The BSE Mid Caps and Small Caps moved side ways to close up by 38.30 points and 36.23 points at 6,383.02 and 7,814.17 respectively.
The market breadth was strong as 1393 stocks closed in green as against 1210 stocks that closed in red.
The Bankex index closed up by 48.72 points at 7,952.81. Scrips that gained are Yes bank (11.55%), Union bank (3.33%), Federal bank (3.31%), Karnataka bank (2.37%), Kotak bank (2.14%), Oriental bank (1.39%), Axis bank (1.35%) and IOB (1.34%).
The Metal index declined by 266.98 points to close at 13,544.58. Major losers are SAIL (6.14%), Jindal Steel (4.49%), Tata Steel (3.39%), JSW Steel (2.9%), SH. Precoated (2.77%), Maharash Sea (1.79%), Welspun Guj (1.41%).
The Capital Goods index dropped by 227.09 points to close at 12,528.84. Scrips that lost are L&T (5.09%), Thermax (4.24%), Elecon Eng (4.21%), Kalpataru Power (3.23%), SKF India (2.42%), Siemens (1.60%) and Punj Lloyd (1.02%).
The Oil and Gas index closed lower by 87.25 points at 10,462.87. Losers are BPCL (1.67%), Aban Offshore (1.64%), RPL (1.57%), HPCL (1.39%), Reliance industries (1.02%), RNRL (0.77%), ONGC (0.65%) and Cairn India (0.35%).
The IT index fell by 63.50 points to close at 3,685.07 as Wipro (4.60%), Rolta India (3.71%), HCL technology (2.61%), Finance Tech (1.67%), TCS (1.64%), Karut Net (1.50%) and NIIT Ltd (1.09%) closed in red.
The BSE Realty index fell by 73.34 points to close at 7,410.22 as Anant Raj (3.67%), HDIL (3.62%), Phoenix mill (3.32%), Purvankara (1.82%), Unitech (1.36%), Ansal Infra (1.21%) and Indbull Real (1.05%) closed lower.
